There is something particularly special about Christmas in Donegal. As the days grow shorter and the landscape takes on its winter colours, the county becomes quieter, calmer and beautifully atmospheric. From long walks along the coast to cosy evenings spent with family, December is a wonderful time to experience the landscapes, traditions and communities that make Donegal so unique.
For Patrick Temple, CEO of Magee Weaving, Christmas is also a time to slow down and appreciate home. Based at the Magee Weaving Mill in Donegal Town, Patrick knows the county in all seasons, but winter brings its own particular magic.
THE BEST WINTER WALKS IN DONEGAL
One of Patrick's favourite places to enjoy a winter walk is Fintra Beach, near Killybegs.
“There’s great light and wildlife on Fintra Beach at this time of year. I like to walk here and do a pit-stop for fish & chips in Killybegs afterwards.”
The combination of dramatic coastline, fresh sea air and winter light makes the beaches and coastal landscapes of Donegal particularly beautiful in December. Fintra Beach is a wonderful place to experience the quieter side of the county, with views across Donegal Bay and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the landscape away from the busier summer months.
A walk along the coast is also a reminder of the importance of Donegal's fishing communities. Patrick enjoys stopping in nearby Killybegs, one of Ireland's most important fishing ports, where the fishing industry remains an important part of life in the area.
It is this connection to the land, sea and local communities that Patrick feels is so central to Donegal – and to the story of Donegal Tweed.
A DONEGAL CHRISTMAS

At Magee Weaving, the Christmas period is particularly special because the mill closes for the festive season.
“Our mill closes for Christmas, so I love the peace and quiet it brings for a couple of weeks.”
