Our design team continues this tradition whilst innovating to make luxurious fabrics from Donegal tweed to Irish linen, making what we do a truly unique offering revered by the catwalks and couturiers of the world.
Inspired by the landscapes and culture of weaving in Donegal, Magee 1866 has been integral to the story of Donegal Tweed for over a century
Heritage & Family
The Magee Weaving and tweed story begins with John Magee in the 1860s who started buying and selling handwoven tweed in cloth markets across Donegal. With its distinctive characteristics - flecks of colour, salt & pepper and herringbone patterns, John Magee recognised the value and opportunity in Donegal Tweed and it was his entrepreneurial spirit that formed the backbone of the Magee Weaving mill we see today.
We are proud to be a fifth-generation family business and one of the longest operating mills in Ireland, protecting and developing upon centuries old textile traditions synonymous with County Donegal.
Meet Patrick
CEO, Magee Weaving
The Magee Weaving mill is led today by the fifth-generation, Patrick Temple who is CEO. He says, “Our mill brings you a unique fabric which is deeply imbued with the knowledge of generations of weavers, brought to life by the vibrancy of our design, which by its very nature is a sustainable choice. We combine our rich weaving heritage with contemporary design to produce beautiful luxury fabrics in the heart of County Donegal that are enjoyed the world over.”
About the Mill
Located in Donegal town by the banks of the River Eske we are a strong team of designers, weavers, finishers and experts creating beautiful cloth with the skills that have been handed from father to son and mother to daughter. It’s a mill that combines the spirit of ingenuity, craftsmanship and creativity in the heart of Donegal.
Our People & Processes
Read moreFrom our textile design team working to create iconic fabric designs to our skilled warping, weaving, finishing and mending teams. People have always been at the heart of our fabrics with traditional skills being passed down through the generations, this is what makes what we do so important and we believe the techniques that take time are the ones that last the test of time.
Hand Weaving
The Donegal Tweed story began with hand weaving, with many people producing tweed in their own homes through the centuries. Woven into these fabrics are not just yarn but stories of families, culture, and an enduring legacy we can still see today. We continue to produce a selection of curated handwoven fabrics using timeless designs and the finest natural yarns, with hand weavers based both in the mill and at home.
The Donegal Tweed Association
Patrick Temple is chairman of The Donegal Tweed Association, a community of weavers who have come together to protect and promote the unique industry associated with Donegal. Together with Molloy & Sons, Studio Donegal, McNutt of Donegal, Eddie Doherty we are campaigning to preserve the heritage and identity of Donegal Tweed with a European PGI status.
Sustainability
Magee Weaving are committed not only to developing high quality, timeless fabrics but to do so in the most sustainable and environmentally friendly way possible. We are focusing on these 3 key areas; natural fibres, renewable resources, people & community.
